Specializing in Bobwhite Quail is What We Do

February 2008

We are expecting the shipping issues concerning shipping day old chicks to be a great year. There is still no guaranteed overnight delivery, but based on last years shipping which went well, we expect them (USPS) to just get better. Fed-Ex is taking the Express Mail Live Shipments for the Postal Service and are keeping in contact with bird shippers with current updates in the system.

January 2007

We are currently expecting the shipping issues concerning chicks to be much better this year do to the extra efforts of BSA and other leaders in our industry. A special Thank You from us here at the Ranch goes to BSA and NAGA.

We do ask that you call us with your zip code for shipping availability and price quote.

New Update

January 2007

Northwest Contract Extened for 2 Years

We have received word from Joel Rosen, USPS Washington D.C. the current Northwest Airlines' contract with USPS to carry lives from Minneapolis-St. Paul and Detroit under a surcharge arrangement as been extended for two year, through February 27, 2009. The $1.00 surcharge will remain in affect. This is great news for those of us in the upper Midwest that rely on this service to carry our birds.

I think it is good to remember, that in Minneapolis-St. Paul and Detroit, Northwest is only one option. These markets are also served by other airlines and Federal Express. The postal airmail personal at these two airports have the option to use any of the carriers as volume and schedules allow.

November 2006

Fed Ex visited Metzer Farms in October and the following points were made:

Things have gone smoothly for FedEx the first four weeks of shipping. All transfers are being made in Memphis. If demand requires it, transfers may also be made in Indianapolis and Oakland when shipping of lives picks up in the spring.

At this point they are getting more Express mail than expected. They are hoping that most of the shipments will be priority which will be transferred in Memphis during the slower part of the day.

The only locations where there will be temperature restrictions are shipments to and from Birmingham, AL or Jackson, MS or Nashville, TN. As these routes are trucked from the sorting facility in Memphis, they cannot accept birds for shipment to or from these locations if temperatures are expected to be over 85 degrees.

FedEx will only accept birds from the USPS on Monday through Friday evenings. So you cannot expect FedEx to carry your shipments if you mail on Saturday or Sunday.

You will need to check the FedEx 2007 holiday schedule when it is announced. July 4, for example, is a Wednesday in 2007. They will not be working that day so if you mail on Tuesday, delivery will be delayed.

October 2006

USPS begin transporting lives on the entire day FedEx network

We have just recieved the following notification from USPS.

Effective with mail acceptance on Monday, October 23, FedEx will begin transporting lives on the entire day network, (in addition to the night network) with a few exceptions.

October 2006

Federal Express and the US post office have reached a contractual agreement on carrying "LIVES". Starting on September 25, Federal Express has taken over the routs previously served by Kitty Hawk (see below for a listing). This is a contractual arrangement through the post office only as Federal Express will not take "LIVE" shipments directly.

At the present time the Post Office will only have Federal Express transport "LIVES" to and from the USPS AMFs. As Federal Express gains more experience, other AMFs will be added to the routs. The full Priority Mail Network effective date has yet to be determined. Commercial airlines are still carrying lives.

BSA ( Bird Shippers of America) is still working to put the temperature guidelines in place by regulation or legislation. BSA is also investigating the problems that shippers have experienced with insurance. We will keep you posted on our progress.

Chick Shipping News:

January 2006

We are proud to announce that we have recently joined BSA, Bird Shippers of America. They have generated a great influence along with NAGA (North American Game bird Assoc.) on the U.S. Postal Service and have been fighting the fight for all of us in the game bird and poultry industry for the right to ship live birds and chicks, and the right for you to receive them. Last shipping season in 2005 was a disaster nationwide. There is some good news that shows promise as in the new contract with Kitty Hawk Air Transport. For Oklahoma the options are still limited, as Kitty Hawk does not have points of origin or destinations in Oklahoma.

The USPS has just announced a new contract with Kitty Hawk Air Transport which is scheduled to begin November 21, 2005. It is for the carriage of “Lives” only and will carry a surcharge of $1.00 per pound. “After all of the shipping problems of this past season we, the Bird Shippers of America, are glad to see our efforts rewarded and pleased to know that the U.S. Postal Service is making an effort on behalf of us who ship lives to help solve our problems.”

Kitty Hawk Points of Origin: MEM, BNA, JAX, MCO, SFO, SAN, PHX, LAS, ELP, AUS, CMH, CLE, CLT, PIT, PHL, SDF, SEA, PDX, DEN, OMA, MCI, BUF, BDL, BOS, FWA, MKE, STL, RIC, ORF, and BWI

Kitty Hawk Destinations: SAN, DEN, BWI, LAX, ELP, SJU, MCO,PDX, PHL, CLT, SFO, IAH, BOS, ORD, DTW, PIT, MKE, CLE, SDF, CVG, LEX, ORD, SLC, LAS, BUF and GRR

Here at the Quail Ranch we are looking at routing our chicks shipments to the Mead, Oklahoma Post Office, as their mail goes directly to the Dallas Airport.  This would give a much greater service area for our clients wishing to order chicks. Our ranch is located North about an hour trip to the Mead, OK. Post Office, at this point in our options for shipping day olds, it seems we have no choice but to make this 2 hour round trip if we are to continue to ship chicks. We certainly are looking for a better solution, but this seems to be our best option for now.

Shipments of live animals has been very difficult for portions of the U.S. over the past several years as the other commercial airlines that do carry lives as mail are reducing flights, using smaller planes that have less cargo carrying capacity and have instituted restrictions that limit their ability to carry live animals.

We will keep on top of this shipping issue with updates in our “Quail Ranch Report” newsletter and here on our web site. Thanks again to all our clients for your patience and understanding.

NAGA/BSA Warning

In December we received a letter from the North American Gamebird Assoc. (NAGA), stating facts about a recent letter manufactured by the (HSUS) Humane Society of the United States urging a ban on shipments of poultry through the mail and they (HSUS) sent this to the Postmaster General of the United States.

The unfounded letter that the HSUS sent to the Postmaster General is of great concern to all hatcheries, producers, and growers of game birds. This information is also very important for purchasers and receivers of game birds.

The HSUS cite their opinion of inhumane treatment of chicks that are shipped and worse (for us) their concern of the spreading of Avian Influenza throughout the country by this mode of transportation. HSUS is very serious about seeing this to a successful completion and are using scare tactics and unfounded, incorrect information to bring this about.

You may think that this problem is for producers only, not true. What affects us, affects you the consumer, also hunting clubs or even individual hobbyists. Anyone that receives US Postal shipped or even Private Trucked shipments of game birds of any age will be impacted by what is happening! We are all in jeopardy.

We must all fight this fight, by writing letters ourselves to our Senators and   Congressmen, Representatives, and through funding and strong membership.

HSUS has 9 million members to convince the US Postal Service and state and federal health officials that their concerns bear action.

This is why we joined BSA, Bird Shippers of America. BSA is a non-profit organization that represents ALL poultry shippers and consumers, and is the only organized entity currently working on these serious issues. Bird Shippers of America, through paid Washington D.C. lobbyists, US Senators and Federal/State Veterinarians across the country, is currently fighting organizations like HSUS and others that oppose the right to ship day old poultry via the mail, and interstate private trucking of poultry of all ages.

BSA needs all our support; they need members and funding to continue this fight. BSA simply cannot continue to do the necessary job that will ensure success without further membership and funding. You can read more on the outstanding efforts of BSA that has helped the game bird industry as well as the domestic poultry industry on their web site, www.birdshippers.org

Please consider the fact that BSA and NAGA are organizations fighting for all our rights constantly, member and non-member alike. Will you consider joining today?

Update : Chick Shipping News

Fall 2005

Our experience this past summer 2005 shipping chicks has been quite daunting to say the least. It has also been a battle nation wide. The United States Post Office is our only avenue to ship the little chicks, so our industry is quite dependent on the availability of air carriers the Post Office has contracts with. In our area, most express mail from the Post Offices goes out through Oklahoma City, or even Tulsa.  They started off the summer 2005 shipping crisis with a "heat ban", which lasted for 2 months, meaning no shipments of live chicks were accepted if the tar-mat was over 85 degrees. It is our opinion that that temperature should not apply to day old chicks.

Then came in the constant turn down of shipping zip codes we would give the post office to run and see if there was in fact next day express mail delivery available to those zip codes.  After one week of this, we were on a mission to find out if this was a short term problem or something permanent.  Finally we found a few answers, though not good news.  The air carrier that carried 90% of Oklahoma's express mail of live animals quit carrying them.  The exact words from the Post Office were, "we lost our air carrier".

This mission led us to contact several different agencies within the postal service, only to be given no solution.

So we contacted an attorney, Stephen S. Boynton, who represents members of NAGA, (North American Game bird Association) that have shipping issues or problems.  He is our hope to get to the bottom of the shipping crisis for the game bird industry. In the issue of "Wildlife Harvest", magazine, Vol.36 NO.6, he wrote a complete article concerning this major problem.

Our wish is that you our clients are well informed that this is a crisis and a hardship not only for us but the whole chick industry. We are very grateful for clients, which are and were very understanding to our predicament. Our hopes are that by the Spring 2006 shipping season, or sooner, the United States Postal Service will have the contracts worked out with their air carriers for a great 2006 shipping season so that we may service our clients requests for quail chicks. Always remember that your business is very important to us. We will keep you updated on the "shipping crisis" on our web site.

Shipping Crisis update: Summer 2005

As of Aug 26th Post Office demands that Fed EX takes all shipments of live chicks.

On August 26th 2005, Paul Vogel, Vice President, Network Operations Management of the USPS wrote a letter to FED EX demanding that they begin carrying live animals under its mail contract with the USPS within 60 days. This is a major breakthrough for the poultry industry. If FED EX complies, shipments of adult poultry and day old birds will be much faster throughout the United States. Congratulations are in order for the Bird Shippers of America, Senator Grassley, his staff and to Mr. Boynton for their work with the USPS on htis very important problem.
